Music

Our Vision

Music is a powerful and universal form of communication that inspires and motivates children and plays a vital role in the life of West Town Primary Academy. Through music, children develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of the diverse world they live in and its history. Music supports creativity and innovation and is fundamental to children’s emotional health and wellbeing. We aim to inspire a lifelong appreciation of music by exposing children to a wide range of musical experiences.

Intent

Our music curriculum is carefully designed and delivered through units devised by staff, ensuring progression and breadth of experience. Children are taught key musical elements, including rhythm and pulse, pitch, dynamics, tempo and composition. The curriculum provides opportunities for children to listen to, appraise, perform and compose music across a wide range of styles, cultures and historical periods. These include genres such as WW2 music, Hip Hop and West Indian drumming, among many others.

Implementation

Music is valued as a powerful way for children to develop creativity, confidence and self-expression. Music lessons are delivered weekly by the class teacher, ensuring consistency and strong links with learning across the wider curriculum. Our music curriculum has been carefully designed by the Meridian Trust Music Team in collaboration with the Music Lead at West Town Primary School, providing a clear progression of skills, knowledge and musical understanding. Implementation is further strengthened through support from the Meridian Trust Music Directors and the Peterborough Music Hub. To ensure the highest quality teaching, teachers are encouraged to take part in regular professional development, enabling them to continually refine their subject knowledge and deliver engaging, high-quality music lessons for all pupils.

Inside the Classroom

In lessons, children develop practical skills by playing both tuned and untuned instruments and by composing their own music. Each unit culminates in a performance, giving children the opportunity to showcase their learning and build confidence. Children regularly listen to and discuss music, explore musical vocabulary and work collaboratively to create and perform pieces. Live music is valued, and pupils are given opportunities to experience visiting performers and musicians.

Enrichment

Parents and carers can support their child’s musical development by encouraging them to listen to a wide range of music and talk about what they hear. Attending school performances, musical showcases and concerts helps to build confidence and enthusiasm. Children are also encouraged to take part in musical experiences beyond the classroom, including performances within school and in the wider community, helping to foster enjoyment and a lasting love of music. Additional opportunities for music can be found through the Peterborough Music Hub.
