About West Town

Welcome to West Town Primary Academy

At West Town Primary Academy, we are proud to be a culturally rich city school with high aspirations for every child. Our community is vibrant, diverse and united by a shared commitment to ensuring that every pupil flourishes—academically, socially and personally.

Quality First Teaching

High‑quality teaching sits at the heart of everything we do. Our curriculum and classroom practice are shaped by strong research, effective pedagogy and a belief that every child deserves the very best learning opportunities.

We are fortunate to have a highly skilled, dedicated teaching team who constantly refine their practice through ongoing professional development. Through bespoke in‑house training and our partnership with the Meridian Trust Teaching School, our staff not only strengthen their own expertise but also contribute to developing the next generation of teachers. We work closely with the Cambridge and Peterborough Teaching School Hub and the University of Cambridge to provide exceptional training and to inspire the educators of the future.

A Purpose‑Built Learning Environment

Our modern, purpose‑built school building offers a wide range of exciting and carefully designed learning spaces, including dedicated cookery and art rooms, a dance and music studio and two spacious halls. Flexible breakout areas create opportunities for group work, project‑based learning and whole‑class collaboration.

Children benefit from well‑stocked library spaces and regular access to laptops and iPads. Technology is thoughtfully integrated into our approach, supporting and complementing learning across the curriculum in meaningful and age‑appropriate ways.

We place a strong emphasis on talk, questioning and deep thinking. This supports children in developing strong reasoning skills and a genuine understanding of their learning. High‑quality feedback which helps ensure progress is continuous and purposeful, strengthened by specialist expertise in maths and English to maintain excellence in these core areas.

Our classes are named after much‑loved children’s authors, helping to create a literacy‑rich environment where pupils are surrounded by high‑quality texts, language and ideas.

Reading is a central part of life at West Town. Our early reading provision is built on the Little Wandle phonics programme, delivered with rigour and consistency to give every child secure foundations in decoding and fluency. As children move through the school, they develop the skills to explore texts at a deeper level and to appreciate the richness of literature. Our Reading Champions help drive our ambition for every pupil to leave us as a confident, fluent reader who truly delights in books and reading.

A Sense of Success

We believe all children should experience success and feel proud of their achievements.

Daily opportunities are built into our timetable to rehearse and refine essential skills in handwriting, calculation, times tables, spelling, punctuation and grammar. This focus on fluency ensures pupils develop the secure foundations they need to access deeper learning across the curriculum and to make exceptional progress by the end of Year 6.

Alongside high standards in reading, writing and maths, we place equal value on the arts, music and PE, enriching our curriculum with memorable trips, visits and wider opportunities. We are proud holders of the Silver Award for Learning Outside the Classroom, recognising our commitment to extending learning beyond the school walls.

To further enhance our provision, we employ specialist teachers in PE and Music, who bring expertise, passion and high expectations to their subjects.
